How naming strategies work

Professional branding agencies tend to mix and match a handful of approaches. Here's what each one means:

Descriptive

The name literally tells you what it does — General Motors, PayPal, The Home Depot. Easy to grasp, hard to trademark.

Suggestive / Evocative

Hints at a benefit or feeling without spelling it out — Netflix, Salesforce, Airbnb. Modern tech brand sweet spot.

Invented / Coined

Made-up words with no prior meaning — Kodak, Xerox, Spotify. Maximum distinctiveness, strongest trademark protection.

Portmanteau

Smashing two words together — Pinterest (pin + interest), Groupon (group + coupon), Instagram (instant + telegram).

Altered spelling

Deliberate misspellings to lock a domain — Lyft, Flickr, Tumblr, Fiverr. Tradeoff: customers can't always spell it.

Compound

Two plain words joined — Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat. Plain but effective and often available.

Metaphorical

Borrowing from myth, nature, or literature — Nike, Oracle, Starbucks, Pandora. Instantly evocative if the reference lands.

Abstract / Arbitrary

Real words with no logical tie to the product — Apple, Amazon, Shell, Orange. Strong legal protection and emotional flexibility.
